How To Remove Old Recessed Light?
Removing the old recessed light seems like a great do-it-yourself project as the process is still the same and easy to use. Before the beginning of the project, removing the recessed light is to take out the recessed housing, install a remodel box and terminate the wires then cover the box by using a ceiling cover. Equipment/Tools and materials needed include Wire stripper/cutter, Cable ripper, Cordless drill, non-contact voltage tester, Flashlight or head-lamp, and Step ladder. Materials, Remodel (old-work) ceiling electrical box, Non-metallic round blank ceiling box cover, Wire nuts, Electrical tape, and Ceiling paint.
First of all, turn off the power and place a strip of painter’s tape over the breaker’s switch then remove the bulb. Remove the light trim by losing with a putty knife then pull straight down to disengage the clips. After completing the above steps, remove the recessed light housing that is attached directly to the ceiling drywall. Test the wires then open up the small box on the light by unscrewing the door.
Disconnect the wires from the light and unscrew the retaining ring on the cable clamp and pull out the wires. Now insert the wires in the old work box and terminate the wires in the box. After termination, you have to install the old work box in the ceiling and then hold it with one hand and then turn the screws on the ceiling box’s attachment wings. Add the blank plate and turn on the circuit breaker. You can paint the blank plate as per your choice but for a closer match, you can paint the plate with matching ceiling paint.
